Neurofeedback is brain exercise. Your brain is observed while in action from moment to moment by monitoring your brain waves. You see your brain activity and change it by rewarding shifts toward a more appropriate and stable brain state. It is a gradual learning process.
Neurofeedback is also called EEG biofeedback. The electroencephalogram (EEG) is another name for the brain wave recordings and refers to the process by which you learn to change your brain waves and gain better control over your brain states.
The brain is amazingly adaptable and capable of learning. It can learn to improve its own performance when it is given the cues about what to change.
When the mature brain is regulating itself effectively and efficiently, and the person is alert and attentive, the brain waves (EEG) show a particular pattern. Neurofeedback challenges the person to maintain this "high-performance," alert, and attentive state. Gradually, the brain learns. And as with other learning, the brain retains this new skill.
Who can benefit?
People of any age can benefit from EEG training. Neurofeedback can help with issues like lack of attention, concentration, motivation, depression, processing, anxiety, migraines, and disruptive sleep problems. Other issues like PTSD and addiction can also be helped by Neurofeedback training. The process can help all people maintain good brain function as they age. Peak performers also use EEG training to enhance their abilities in sports, business and the arts.
